Justin Theroux is about as pompous as he can be with the tar-black, openly fake-looking mustache of Liddy, paired neatly with the agent’s troubling love of Hitler’s speeches, guns, and propensity to keep his hand over a flame as a gesture of his trustworthiness.

Thanks to the classic that is All the President's Men, we're more than familiar with the sensational true story of how Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered Watergate. Lesser known perhaps is the other duo at the heart of this scandal, a pair of operatives named E. Gordon Liddy, who also had a hand in toppling the Nixon presidency—except they had been scheming to do the exact opposite.
The actress is of course best known for her role as Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, Headey has also appeared in 300, Fighting With My Family, Gunpowder Milkshake and most recently lent her voice to the animated movie DC League of Super-Pets. Dorothy Hunt is the wife of Howard Hunt, but she is no typical housewife. There are reports that she was an asset for the CIA in her own right and would have a hand to play in the Watergate scandal.
The principals in this particular telling of the story are E. They were called the Plumbers because, well, plumbers locate and stop leaks. The five-episode limited series premieres on HBO and HBO Max on May 1. "White House Plumbers" is better before it gets to Watergate, with the first half depicting how Liddy and Hunt were bombastic but somehow good at their jobs, which helped them lead Nixon's corrupt Committee for the Re-election of the President. (The title comes from how they were known for "fixing leaks.") The series slightly elevates its comedy here. Harrelson and Theroux ham up liberally recounted events that have some shred of truth, and flourish in a passage about investigating the therapist of Daniel Ellsberg (who famously released the Pentagon Papers). We watch Liddy and Hunt, in bafflingly fake wigs, do dumb things like pose in front of the camera used during a break-in (only made worse when Hunt doesn’t take the film out before it reaches the authorities later on). It’s Coen brothers-lite with the bittersweetness of history and a looming sense of how ill-conceived each move is.

However, a quid pro quo fundraising issue between I.T.T. and the Nixon administration would end up being a key part of the Watergate scandal. McCord was another former CIA operative who was brought on in the official capacity to be the head of security for Nixon's Committee for the Re-Election of the President, but would find himself in the thick of the Watergate scandal. Like Hunt, G. Gordon Liddy was a former federal agent, previously working for the FBI before he started working for the Plumbers.
The plumbers would eventually be responsible for the illegal activities—breaking into and bugging the Democratic National Committee headquarters—that would blow up into Watergate and force Nixon's resignation. White House Plumbers is also based on a book written by one of these fixers, Egil Krogh. Gleeson is coming off some of the best reviews of his career for the FX series The Patient.
